Horseback riding is a fun and exhilarating sport that’s enjoyed by all ages. While it’s not as physical as playing soccer or jogging five miles, riding still offers many benefits such as stress relief, muscle development, and increased self-confidence. Riders also burn calories, though the amount usually depends on the gait they’re riding as well as their weight and age.
When you’re ready to enjoy a leisurely ride on a trail, there are two stables near The Apartments of St. Charles where you can spend some time on horseback.
Piscataway Stable has a five-star rating on Yelp as the trails are beautiful and the guides are both friendly and funny. The stables and surrounding area offer a rustic feel that adds to the charm and before heading out, the staff will ask about your experience to pair you with the right horse. During the one-hour ride, you will make your way through 250 acres of wooded trails and fields that provide picturesque scenery.
Southern Grace Farm
Established in 1897, Southern Grace Farm is a fifty-two-acre equine facility that offers exciting trail rides. The property has a colorful history as it was originally part of a larger estate known as Rich Hill. Once owned by Colonel Samuel Cox, a Southern sympathizer, Rich Hill is where John Wilkes Booth and accomplice David Edgar Harold hid after Booth assassinated President Lincoln. They arrived on April 16, 1865 and Colonel Cox asked confederate agent Thomas Jones to hide them in the pine thicket near Southern Grace Farm. When it comes to riding, join the guides on the Johnny Boy’s BBQ adventure that lasts 3 to 3 1/2 hours. You’ll travel by horseback to Johnny Boy’s BBQ where you will tie up your horse before feasting on a delicious lunch. Afterward, you will ride back to the starting point enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way.
